The U.S Global Ocean Carbon and Repeat Hydrography Program carries out a systematic and global re-occupation of select WOCE/JGOFS hydrographic sections to quantify changes in storage and transport of heat, fresh water, carbon dioxide (CO2), and related parameters. By integrating the scientific needs of the carbon and hydrography/tracer communities, major synergies and cost savings are achieved. In addition to efficiency, the coordinated approach produces scientific advances that exceed those of individual programs

The automated shore stations produce time series on chlorophyll, pressure, salinity, and temperature. Purpose: These data combine with other automated shore stations provide time series on chlorophyll, pressure, salinity, and temperature. Automated shore station time series are used in regional ocean modeling, water quality, storm water discharge and outfall tracking, and erosion by scientists, coastal engineers, planners, and managers, as well as mariners and the general public.

Manual Shore Stations

The Manual Shore Stations Program collects, checks and publishes temperature and salinity data observed at shoreline stations along the United States West Coast from La Jolla, California to the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Washington. The data consist of daily temperature and salinity values when available. This program ranks as one of the worlds longest ocean time series and the longest on the Pacific Rim. From this time series we can accurately pin down the nature of ocean seasonality for the entire coast of California, and have begun to understand the anomalies caused by recurring equatorial El Nino Conditions. There have been large cold anomalies too, but, as yet, we do not understand their cause. In addition to these episodic anomalies, there has been a long-term trend for a warmer California Current, beginning around 1977. These warm and cold anomalies and the long-term warming trend have significant biological effects on plankton production, fish catch, and seabirds. They also are associated with changes in sea level, wave heights and beach erosion. We are only beginning to learn the details of the linkages between all these processes. This growing databank provides us with one of the first opportunities to separate natural from man-cause changes in our coastal zone. This work is a collaborative program sponsored by the California Department of Boating and Waterways.

Spray Gliders

The Spray underwater glider was first developed by Scripps and Woods Hole scientists with support from ONR for long-range oceanographic missions in 1999. Spray gliders are battery-powered, rudderless vehicles capable of operating up to 1500 m depth; Typical sensors onboard include CTDs, fluorometers, altimeters, optical backscatter sensors, and / or ADCPs. For deployments in Southern California, Spray gliders cycle from the surface to 500 m depth, traveling 3 km in the horizontal in 3 hours. Spray's horizontal velocity is about 0.25 m/s while its vertical velocity is roughly 0.1 m/s. The gliders have GPS and Iridium antennas in each wing, so when a Spray glider is on the surface it rolls 90 deg to obtain a GPS fix and communicate. During communications, Spray sends data to shore, and shore-based pilots can change mission parameters such as waypoints and dive depth. Typical deployment duration in Southern California is about 3 months.

Harmful Algae & Red Tide Regional Monitoring Program

Monitoring for harmful algal blooms (HAB) occurs at six piers along the southern California coastline: -Cal Poly Pier in Avila Beach -Stearn's Wharf and Goleta Pier in Santa Barbara -Santa Monica Pier -Newport Beach Pier -Scripps Pier in La Jolla A map of current observations is available for the region here. The HAB groups of greatest concern to California are Pseudo-nitzschia and Alexandrium, since some species can produce potent algal toxins that can be transferred through the food web to higher organisms such as marine mammals and humans. Water samples and net tows are collected once per week to monitor for HAB species, and naturally occurring algal toxins, as well as water temperature, salinity, and nutrients. Objectives: The goals of this program are to collect comparable data at five regional stations, provide timely updates on HAB events, and aid in understanding the timing, extent, and impact of these events on humans as well as the ecosystem. ¯ Monitor for specific phytoplankton and algal toxins. ¯ Provide weekly online updates of potential HAB events. ¯ Coordinate sampling parameters, methods, and data output for monitoring HAB events and coastal water quality. ¯ Contribute to the statewide phytoplankton and shellfish monitoring program for the California Department of Public Health. IODP Site Survey Data Bank

The Site Survey Data Bank (SSDB) is a searchable digital library, holding more than 8000 data files, supporting the development and review of proposals for the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP). In addition, the collections serve the needs of drilling expeditions and general interests of the international research community, beyond drilling. Most of the data are freely available to the public. The SSDB also provides access to 8390 legacy DSDP and ODP digital files, and 33,380 physical objects, including seismic sections, track charts and bathymetric maps.

Rolling Deck to Repository

The Rolling Deck to Repository (R2R) program systematically captures all the routine underway data from the entire US academic research vessel fleet and migrates them to NOAA national data centers (NGDC and NODC). 26 standard data types are archived, from a wide range of disciplines. During the 2 years since the launch of R2R in 2009, data from a total of 2240 cruises have been received, from 26 vessels, totaling more than 8 million data files (9TB).

Spiess Deep Tow Data Archive

Catalog of more than 1500 physical objects from the Fred N. Spiess Deep Tow Data Archive, including log books, maps, sidescan and bathymetric sonar records and seafloor photographs from 102 expeditions worldwide, 1964-1993. The holdings have been transferred from the Geological Data Center to the SIO Library archives. The catalog is currently available as a spreadsheet with extensive supporting information. Online search capabilities will be added in the future.
